Listing Description

What do we do?

We recognize the dignity and beauty of each person, the Mooncrest Outreach Program promotes spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional and social development for the children and their families of the Mooncrest neighborhood.

Who do we help?

Mooncrest Neighborhood Programs is a Ministry of the Felician Sisters of North America.

Mooncrest, located high on a bluff overlooking the Ohio River in Moon Township, includes more than 100 mostly rental multi-units originally built in 1943 for workers involved in the United States’ massive mobilization for World War II.  Mooncrest carries an historic designation.

The Mooncrest Neighborhood Center is located in the Mooncrest neighborhood and is supported by Moon Township.  The Felician Sisters support a free After School Program for grades 1-6 to provide homework help, free summer day camps, free summer lunch in cooperation with Allegheny County and the Moon Township Police Department, social activities for adults and families and a GED site in partnership with Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council.
The Sisters are guided in service by their core values for ministry:  Respect for Human Dignity, Compassion, Transformation, Justice and Peace and Solidarity with the Poor.  Felician Sisters live in the Mooncrest neighborhood and collaborate with neighborhood churches and organizations to provide activities for youth and families. Mooncrest Executive Director, Sister Rene Procopio, formed strong, local partnerships including Robert Morris University, Sewickley YMCA , Youthtowne, Gilmary Retreat Center,  Sweetwater Center for the Arts and independent musicians to enhance program opportunities for the children living in Mooncrest.

Volunteer Opportunities

PART TIME STAFF and VOLUNTEERS are needed for the After School Program.

STUDENTS needing to complete their GED and volunteer tutors to help them are needed.  Mooncrest residency is not required to participate in the GED program.
