What do we do?

The mission of the Homewood Children’s Village is to simultaneously improve the lives of Homewood’s children and to reweave the fabric of the community in which they live.

Who do we help?
The Homewood Children’s Village (HCV or The Village) is a child-centered, comprehensive community initiative whose mission is “to simultaneously improve the lives of Homewood’s children and to reweave the fabric of the community in which they live.” Planning for the Homewood Children’s Village first began in the spring of 2009, and was officially founded in 2010. The HCV uses five broad strategies to accomplish our work: We provide direct services where we find a need that is not being met by other organizations in our community; AND convene service providers, coordinate their services along our cradle-to-college-to-career developmental continuum, build their capacity to design, deliver and evaluate evidence-based interventions, at scale and with fidelity; and collaborate with other non-profits, government and businesses to address issues that directly and indirectly impact children who live and learn in Homewood. Together, this work explicitly seeks to advance our mission. Our core work is direct services within these areas: Full Service Community Schools focused on case management and parent engagement for Homewood’s schools grades K – 12, our “Promise Fulfillment” services focused on post-secondary readiness for grades 9 – 12 as well as post-secondary student supports, and health and wellness where we provide a hybrid of direct service and network collaboration, focused on bringing support for nutrition, physical activity, mental/behavioral health and physical health to Homewood’s children and families. We also coordinate a network of partners in our work with the Homewood Community and Economic Development Collaborative (H-CEDC) and the Homewood Early Learning Network (ELN). Together these services, collaborations, and networks form a comprehensive system of supports from cradle to college and career.

Volunteer Opportunities
We have many opportunities to volunteer including after-school tutoring and packing bags for the Power Pack Nutrition Program. Additionally, a number of one-time events such as the Homewood 5k and Health Expo and the HCV Block Party Back-To-School Event.

Bridge to College
Bridge-to-College is a collection of year-round programs, partnerships, initiatives, and strategies that prepare high school aged youth for success after high school graduation. The program encourages a college-going culture, supports students in their efforts to achieve meaningful and promising postsecondary outcomes, an empowers youth to become agents of community change and transformation. Some of the key activities include soft skill development (e.g., self-efficacy, financial literacy), academic enrichment, college/career readiness, college tours, STEAM projects, and community service. This work is made possible through the collaboration with numerous community partners including gBible Center Church, Grow Pittsburgh, Higher Achievement, and the YMCA Lighthouse Project among many others.
